Simple Time Lapse Photos

Not long ago, I was pleasantly surprised to find an interval timer feature in one of the cameras that I was using. With this feature, you can record the progress of an “event” with a series of photos taken at a set time between each capture. It’s commonly referred to as time lapse photography. An example of time lapse is the way that a flower seems to magically grow before your eyes as it blossoms.

Since I was curious about using this feature, I looked for an appropriate subject. It just so happens that we had recently returned from a trip out west and brought back a small collection of “Mexican jumping beans“.

Note:
Two years ago when I originally wrote this article, sales of GPS Navigation devices were in high gear. Most of you already know how a GPS device works:

  1. receives multiple satellite signals
  2. determines the geographic location by 3D triangulation
  3. displays your position superimposed on a map on its small LCD screen
  4. accepts your desired destination
  5. provides driving turn by turn instructions to reach the destination

I was interested in adding location data to my snapshots – “geotagging”. Geotagging is equivalent to performing steps 1. and 2. I found my geotagging solution in the reasonably priced PhotoTrackr.

Over the years Stay Focused has accumulated a very large collection of photographic equipment. As a publisher of a growing line “how-to books“, we have purchased many brands and models of both point-and-shoot and digital SLR cameras (see below). It’s no surprise that the flood of new feature-filled cameras keeps coming at a dizzying pace.

The rate at which new features are introduced is simply amazing. What surprises me the most is the high quality of photographs that are within reach of the casual user while shooting under a very wide variety of conditions. No longer does one have to be a camera geek to capture technically excellent photos. (more…)
