Printing Big
13th September 2022
Large Size Prints Without a Large Price
Some call me “old school” but I’m not a big fan of showing pictures on the tiny screen of my cellphone.
Quite often I print some of my favorite shots onto photo paper. With my Epson ET-3750 Printer I’ve made hundreds of 4″x6″ prints and dozens of larger 8-1/2″x11″ enlargements. In the two years that I’ve had the ET-3750 printer I have never had to change an ink cartridge. The printer’s large EcoTanks are refillable making the cost of the prints very affordable.
Every so often I’ll take a picture that I’d like to show off – meaning print a bigger enlargement. Earlier this year I found out about the Epson ET-8550 EcoTank that handles paper up to 13″x19″ at an affordable $600 price.
Here’s a few short steps for setting up the printer for use.
As you can see I’ve been able to make a bunch of big enlargements – at a reasonable price.
The ET-8550 has other features other than its large print capability.

Wireless connection to your Mac or Windows PC
Two-sided printing
High resolution document scanning and copying up to 8-1/2″ x 14″
Handles variety of papers including glossy, matte, texture, cardstock
For those of you who like to print big – this is an affordable and capable printer.

Using Smaller Frames
On my computer desktop, I have a folder labeled “To Be Printed”.
Every once in a while as I’m editing my photos, I’ll drop a copy of a favorite image into the folder. As the number of images within the folder grow, I feel compelled to make prints and get them up on the wall.
Years ago I realized that I didn’t have to always make huge prints. By printing smaller sizes more photos would see the light of day and keep from setting my wallet back too much.
To make best use of the limited wall space, I started to use sets of identically sized frames. They are light weight with glass or plexiglass to protect the prints and easy to hang.
A few of the favorite photographs get special treatment – they are printed in a larger size.
these are all 4″ x 6″ prints
here is a small section of the wall with three different sizes
these are all 8″ x 8″ prints
these two prints are mounted in larger 16″ x 20″ frames
this single print is 24″ x 36″
So get those images out of your “To Be Printed” folder.
When your “To Be Printed” folder gets filled again, you can simply change the photos.
Remember that you don’t have to think big; smaller sizes make attractive displays.
Epson SureColor P600

Professional Quality Prints
One of the stops at this month’s Wedding & Portrait Photographers International Expo was the Epson booth.
For several years I’ve used the Epson R2880 to print mid-size photographs. I wanted to see the new Epson P600 which is the successor to the R2880. The two are similar in many respects: 9 ink cartridges; 3 levels of black for b&w images; accommodates paper sizes to 13″ x 19″; 13″ roll paper handling for 13″ wide panoramas.
The P600 uses Epson’s latest UltraChrome HD ink. The ink is packaged in higher capacity cartridges. According to the Epson representative, the black inks have been improved for richer b&w prints.
I’m a fan of many of Epson’s photo and fine art papers to creatively match your images. They include glossy, matte, metallic, textured, canvas, more. The P600 is on my short list of equipment to buy.
The suggested price is $799 and is available immediately. For more information about the P600, please visit Epson.
